It's the cheapest maintenance your system will ever get — and the one most people skip until the airflow dies. Here's the honest schedule.

Ask ten people when they last changed their air filter and eight will say "when I moved in." Meanwhile, a clogged filter is behind more airflow complaints, frozen coils, and burned-out blower motors than any other single cause we see. The fix costs a few dollars and takes two minutes.
Your system is designed to move a specific volume of air. A dirty filter is like breathing through a straw: the blower works harder, coils run colder than designed (and can freeze), rooms heat and cool unevenly, and energy use climbs. Long before anything "breaks," you're paying more for worse comfort.
Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, it's done. Note the size printed on the frame (like 16x25x1), and when you put the new one in, make sure the airflow arrow on the frame points toward the unit — it matters.
Set a reminder on the first of every month: check the filter. It's the single highest-return habit for your HVAC system, your air quality, and your energy bill.
Airflow still weak with a fresh filter? Then the problem is deeper — ducts, blower, or coils — and it's worth an honest look. Here are the seven causes we see most.
